This event was held at the Phoenix Settlement, an Ashram established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1904 in Durban South Africa. The message was the importance of respect for diversity and building a culture of nonviolence. Participants ranged from children from a nursery school on the Settlement who sang about respect for their bodies against abuse of children. We had a high school from the vicinity where they achieved a 90.55% pass rate as against 30-40% in the previous years and celebrated their efforts. There were presentations from the senior citizens group, computer literacy group, and ended up with a short demo by a magician and a yoga session. Next event will be a Gandhi Media lecture on the 4 April, birth date of Martin Luther King Jr. and then the annual Salt march on the 22 April both will focus on the three icons Gandhi King and Mandela. We are celebrating Nelson Rohlihlahla Mandela's 100th birth anniversary this year. On the 18th July, his birthday, we will have a group doing voluntary service and a lecture. We will end the season on the 2nd October, day of nonviolence and birth date of Gandhiji. We will organise a meeting of our Gandhi Club 150 to discuss the programmes for 2019 when we will be observing the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhiji.
