Despite what we hear and see on the news, we have a deeply UNITED body politic in America. Whether people identify as progressive, conservative, independent or “other”, the vast majority of Americans believe our current pay-to-play political system doesn’t represent them. Particularly in the election of 2016, where the candidate named “Neither of the Above” would have won in a landslide, citizens are feeling disheartened, discouraged and disenfranchised.

Webinar host Steve Bhaerman has a playful way of characterizing this new movement to put the "heart" at the center of our discourse and activate and cultivate the heart and soul of who we really are: "Heartland Security." The conversation begins by calling forth a new vision of "sane and sacred" that encompasses the religious, the spiritual, and the ethical secular. It is a common (and yet until now all-too-uncommon) space beyond religion and non-religion where we recognize the three expressions of love -- truth, beauty and goodness.

Those who come from seemingly opposite positions might better be asked to define the goal they are working toward -- these days, it might be something like: “Empowering the will of We the People.”
Maybe we’d find that we agree more than we disagree if we’d take a step back… if we could realize that we have been allowing ourselves to be emotionally manipulated by “hot button issues” that keep the culture wars battle alive so that we (conveniently) cannot come together to enforce a higher standard for our governance."
The way forward will involve the "sane and reverent majority" -- left and right coming front-and-center -- gathering around the values that unite us. Beyond the identity issues that ultimately pit us one against the other there are the IDENTICAL issues we all face: clean air, clean water, clean soil and clean government.
